Research strongly suggests that students who stay in school longer are more successful, both personally and in their future work. To increase student retention numbers into Years 11 and 12, and attainment of the TCE, the Tasmanian Government has an expectation that all high schools offer some 11 and 12 courses on campus for the beginning of the school year in 2021. This programs’ goal is to ensure students are able to participate and engage in learning opportunities by improving access to personalised learning pathways.
It is my belief that Launceston and Newstead Colleges provide fantastic opportunities for our students and the large majority of Brooks’ students will continue their education in either of these colleges or in the TAFE system. However a small number of students will be looking for other opportunities. Brooks is working with other Launceston high schools: Riverside, Prospect, Queechy, Exeter and Kings Meadows, as well as Lilydale District High and Launceston Big Picture with the goal to provide other flexible opportunities for all our students. An example might be that a student who wants to study agriculture might complete a VET course at Lilydale or a student who is interested in viticulture might attend a VET course at Kings Meadows High School. At Brooks High School we are planning to support our EAL (English as an Additional Language) students by offering EAL Level 1 and 2, English Level 1 at Brooks in 2021. This will provide students with smaller classes in a familiar environment to further their English before transitioning to a college. Any students who are interested please contact me to discuss this further.
I would like to congratulate all students who participated in our swimming trials last week. I heard it was a fabulous event and the level of enthusiasm, energy and sportsmanship was very evident. Our Beach Carnival was due to be held on Friday, 13th March. This is a wonderful event with a focus on participation, team work and fun and a great deal of work goes into the preparation. Unfortunately the weather forecast was dire and a decision had to be made to cancel it on the day.
Kind Regards
Louise Fisher

International Women's Day Breakfast
On Wednesday, last week, some Prefects attended a Women’s Day Breakfast. This day was a part of the female emerging leaders’ program in which we heard from inspiring women sharing their views and experiences of social, economic, cultural and political achievements. Listening to such dedicated women acknowledge their struggles and showing resilience, really encouraged us all and we will use this experience to motivate and make a difference in our school environment.

In Child Studies, we were lucky to have ex-student Ashley Turner come in to speak to the class about life as a teenage mother. Her story and advice was very insightful. Thank you for this opportunity Ashley and thank you for bringing in Lucas. He is adorable. Ms Belinda Mackrill
