Dear Families and Community Members
Exciting news for BHS – we had 6/8 teams in the semi-final in the Northern High School Sports Association Winter Roster, which were played on Wednesday. This was fantastic recognition for our dedicated students and their coaches. We now have 2 teams in the Netball and Indoor Soccer finals. It would be sensational to see as many parents and community members supporting our students at these games on Wednesday 4th September.
- 12:30pm - Netball - Star of The Sea V BHS @ Hoblers Bridge Road
- 1:15pm - Girls Indoor Soccer - Cressy A V BHS A @ Elphin Sports Centre Crt 3
We also have our year 9/10 rock band Rinzler (Rosella, Brock, Po and Liam) and Rosella representing BHS in the Rock Challenge on Friday September 6 at the Launceston Conference Centre (old Door of Hope). Congratulations to all students who participated in the playoffs and to our two judges Ms A and Mr Campbell. We wish Rinzler and Rosella every success – we will be there to cheer them on!
Congratulations also to our amazing artists and Ms A and Mr C for another visually spectacular BHS Art Exhibition. Our official opening was on Wednesday last week and I encourage as many of you as possible to visit our exhibition space and absorb the diversity of art on display. Once again our emerging artists have made us proud; from sculpture, digital and visual art there is something to engage all eyes!
Last week we had our School Review and we were delighted with the findings of the school review team who spent 3 days talking to staff, students and parents; the panel were also present at planning meetings and conducted classroom and playground observations. They named up 3 Affirmations (areas of real strength), Commendations (areas we are doing well) and some recommendations (areas for further consideration)
Affirmations:
- All teaching staff acknowledged and expressed the value of collaborative teams as the key driver for planning.
- There is a happy optimistic feel to the school where staff feel well supported by their colleagues and the leadership team.
- The profile of the school in the community is changing, students and parents know what is expected.
Commendations:
- In its use of discretionary school funds, the school gives priority to additional staffing to address the needs of individual learners.
- The school has scheduled time for collaboration, and team norms and set agendas guide the planning.
- There is a clearly documented and procedural approach to school improvement.
Recommendations:
- Ensure there is an understanding across the whole school of the behaviour management practices and processes that support students in their learning.
- Explore opportunities to engage with parents and carers as valued partners in school improvement.
- Inquire into the application of the Teaching and Learning Framework and identify elements that can be enhanced to progress further implementation.
As a staff we will be unpacking this information in greater detail.
In our assembly last week, it was my great privilege to recognise one student from every grade who had demonstrated or actioned our school values. I would like to congratulate the following students.
We are very, very proud of the positive and optimistic vibe at BHS! Remember to be kind, show gratitude and be caring towards others; these are important qualities reflected in our values of respect, courage, aspiration and growth.

Acting School Principal
A very excited group of students, and adults, attended an information day at the recently opened Silo Hotel last week.
Students from year 9/10 Foods were introduced to the many career paths available in the Hospitality industry before taking a tour of the hotel’s facilities, including their most luxurious room – gorgeous!!!
We then spent our lunch break outside at the new Riverbend Park before heading over to Drysdale House to visit the trianing facilities there.
A very informative and enjoyable day was had by all.
Matilda Production at Princess Theatre
On Thursday the 22nd the Year 8 Dance and Drama, 9/10 Drama and 9/10 Production classes went to the Princess Theatre to watch Launceston College’s production of Matilda. From the amazing singers to the impressive dance numbers, all students attending were impressed by the talent presented on stage. The incredible visuals had us clapping and cheering. It was a great opportunity for our Performing Arts students to see previous Brooks students shine in such a performance, and for us to see what we could be a part of, if attending Launceston College. – Mackenzie Williams – 9-10 Production
School surveys have now been posted home to parents who were randomly selected by computer. Parents are encouraged to complete the survey and return it to the school in the envelope provided. Thank you to the parents who have already returned their completed surveys, your participation in this process is greatly appreciated.
7E have recently finished their Digital Art rotation and have completed some great samples of work.
Students developed familiarity and confidence within the Photoshop interface, learning how to use an array of tools to create characters, exploring different text effects and photographing each other with creative lighting and projection techniques. It was great to see the vast improvement from week 1 to week 5 with many students improving their resilience and their ability to problem solve independently and even guide their peers through challenging tasks. Well done 7E!

Recently, some Year 7 students have been trialling MDT. As part of this process they have made some beautiful wooden vase holders which support a glass test tube to hold the flowers.
MDT teacher, Mr Bonney, had visited The Hub and had noted that some of the Hub students were making paper flowers for a future enterprise. He asked two Year 10 students, who are part of The Hub program, if they would like to teach his Year 7 class how to make a paper flower for their vases. Both students agreed and ran a highly successful class. The class was enjoyed by all. The Year 7’s proved to be excellent “students” and The Hub students were confident and capable “teachers”. Well done to all.
Anna McKendrick - The Hub Teacher
In Year 9, students have been working hard on their vocabulary and deepening their knowledge of word origins. Through a word inquiry, students are unpacking terminology related to the Dystopian unit they are studying in Humanities and learning more about word meanings.
